Should I market my iphone app (by uploading the video) before it gets to the app store?

What’s common with movies is that they release trailers way before the movie becomes available on theaters. Will the same thing work with iPhone apps? A lot of developers makes videos of their apps in action just when the app is available. Would it make more sense to make it available before the app is available, especially if it’s an impulse-purchase type of app?

Absolutely! Create a desire for your product. Be sure to create a website completely dedicated to your app if you haven’t already. At the end of the video cut to a ‘coming soon’ screen follow by a screen that says something like ‘To pre-order or for more info go to thekillerapp.com’. At the site make sure that you can capture communication info. This can be getting their email address or letting them become a fan on facebook or following you on twitter. Let the user decide how they want to get updates about your app.
When your app is available you should already have some people who are ready to purchase and you will be able to notify them. This site will also be a great way to keep in contact with your users after they have purchased your app and have ideas for you to improve the app or have technical issues.
When your app is released also send some coupon codes to todayiniphone.com. Rob who runs that site has a very popular podcast and he will mention your app and give away the coupons to his listeners.

Yes.. You can do as much as you can.. You will have some fan for your app if it is really good.

Also there are websites where you can post the preview of your own app.

Yes, absolutely start promoting your app even before it’s available in the App Store. When you do get listed in the App Store, you’ll be on the list of new apps for a short while – this is when a large number of your sales will happen. If you start building buzz around your app before it’s available, the more sales you’ll get as soon as you launch. Best of luck!
