new! iPAD KORG iMS20 – Analog Synth and Drum Machine Emulator – Detailed Review Part A

Posted: October 21st, 2011 | Author: | Filed under: Everyday Apps | Tags: , , , , , , , , , , | 25 Comments »

THE NEXT Great App from KORG! Emulation of their classic MS20 synth from 1978, used by many top electronica bands over the last 32 years. (Also reincarnated in the KORG Legacy Collection, and Nintendo DS10 + !) Multitouch makes this the most synth you can get in the world of “virtual knobs”.

@zellymusic The drums are fully editable – you can improve them however you like? Also try iElectribe R for drum synthesis, obviously.

@EYEM2L8 Most do not share your opinion. ;-) Note that this has been a top selling audio app ever since it’s release, and with good reason.

this crap sounds like a synth with brain damage.

The drums sound like basic toy drums. I wanted something to compliment nano studio and also BM2. ( updated iPad version )

What’s so hot about making cheesy music ? The sound are not impressive as the interface.

One thing to remind people is IT”S ONLY 15 BUCKS!!! Yes, we can all own super cool synths with the IPad.
Add a M-audio Keyrig 49 midi controller(keyboard to the MKS-20) and you are in business..
a true satellite workhorse synth to supplement your desktop workstation. The M-audio keyboard even gets it’s power right from the Ipad usb connection(camera kit) so it’s very handy and portable for all of your app softsynths.
    A you can see, I’m a fan.

@b1gbudda waiting for my ipad2 to rock up in the mail… this will certainly be the first app i buy!

meanwhile… while i am waiting for my ipad to rock up… there is a warehouse somewhere in the world full of them taking up space.

@b1gbudda me too. ;-) you’ll find it very worthwhile for this and many other apps. ohm!

@VJFranzK – great intro & review of an app I have and love! Are you going to make a Part B video of the apps other features? It would really help the many people who are struggling with this app if you covered the sequencer & its 4 modes, did the drums in more depth (including editing the drum sounds),using the effects, and the patch panel (there’s good stuff on the patch panel on AutomaticGainsay’s channel for the original MS-20, but iMS-20 users may not find this). Thanks!

@lolatu666 you are right. also like a lite version of Reason – very powerful virtual synth for this mini computer. And now, you can even CONTROL IT BY MIDI, as if it’s an actual groovebox! (using digital camera connection kit and a usb midi plug – see manual)

This looks pretty awesome a bit like fruity loops and it’s really cheap!

  14. 14 OdinoMarco said at 11:53 am on October 21st, 2011:

    @VJFranzK

I’ll make it simple: I just think this concept of the app. is an old thing: we did it before. I mean the challenge is to think about a new way of making music with ipad, Be modern with modern things…

  15. 15 VJFranzK said at 12:21 pm on October 21st, 2011:

@OdinoMarco But does your real KORG fit in your laptop bag? ;-) Harsh critique here – but a lot of the 1980′s, 90′s and onward is also made with this type of gear. You have a point about it being a recreation of an old synth, though it is a quite nice one, especially for a portable device, and at this price range! (If you think it’s “pure noise”, why do you own a real KORG, may I ask?) There are a bunch of other iPad apps out there that do brand NEW things to try also!

  16. 16 OdinoMarco said at 1:19 pm on October 21st, 2011:

hey folks but this is only pure noise, a simple music form like be in the seventies. Where is the innovation? My real korg sounds better . Please think different: We don’t need this clones of instruments worst of before. Please invent something new, this is a step backward. Unuseful

  17. 17 VJFranzK said at 1:54 pm on October 21st, 2011:

@Syntox True, but there are other apps that could be said for too! See Nano Studio, Aurora HD, ReactTable, etc….

  18. 18 Syntox said at 2:27 pm on October 21st, 2011:

FINALLY something makes an iPad actually worth owning.

  19. 19 onnolab said at 2:47 pm on October 21st, 2011:

can you record patterns as audio files and upload into your computer?

  20. 20 VJFranzK said at 3:35 pm on October 21st, 2011:

@korgds10 One of the major ideas of using a multi touch iPad is to not be limited to only one point of contact?

  21. 21 soupforare said at 4:10 pm on October 21st, 2011:

Great demo, but it’s x0x style, not electribe style… Where do you think korg got it? ;)

  22. 22 VJFranzK said at 4:38 pm on October 21st, 2011:

@AMOKIAN Thanks! I have done them for Noisebug and briefly Sonic State, but now i need to find a new $ponsor ;-)

  23. 23 VJFranzK said at 5:00 pm on October 21st, 2011:

@pcuimac Yes, I wonder why it’s only one live synth? BUT that one is a lot more complex in terms of the knobs and patch cables. The effects section is much better also, and you can use some of the drum voices for notes instead, which I more discovered after making this video.

They are different, but it would be hard to decide which one is better! ;-)

  24. 24 VJFranzK said at 5:06 pm on October 21st, 2011:

    @hustletv oops! Fixed. I was thinking of DS10 for a minute…

But my title is usually “VJ” = video jockey

  25. 25 pcuimac said at 5:30 pm on October 21st, 2011:

    Already downloaded it. It´s awsome!
But the DS-10 Version has 2 Synth and is synchronizable via Wifi. That´s what i miss with the iMS-20. But of course it has much more effects and parameters to tweak and 6 instead of 4 drums. The download section looks nice but it always crashes if I try it. Can only play previews. Nice video btw.
